(Cucumis melo) Dating back over 1000 years, Bateekh Samara is an heirloom honeydew originating from Northern Iraq. Plants yield amazing quantities of oblong melons with netted, gray-green rinds and vibrant lime-green flesh. Flavor is distinct from other honeydew, with a tart, almost citrusy flavor. We love to puree frozen Bateekh melon chunks with a bit of honey to make a delicious sorbet of unmatched freshness and flavor. 85 days to harvest. 25 seeds per packet.

Unique, sweet, citrus-like taste! 95 days. Oblong fruit is brownish-green and netted outside, lime green within. In our trials the flavor was an unusual, a very delicious, sweet-tart combination with a distinct citrus taste. The name simply means “old melon from Samarra,” which is a city in northern Iraq. Original seed was furnished by our friend, Iraqi seed collector Nael Aziz, who writes that this variety is known to have been grown in the Abbasid Period over one thousand years ago! Endangered due to war and America’s aggressive promotion of patented seeds in Iraq.

Sprouts in 7-14 Days Ideal Temperature: 75-90 Degrees F Seed Depth: 1/2 inch Plant Spacing: 18" Frost Hardy: No

CULTURE: Direct sow seeds outdoors 2 weeks after last frost, once soil temps have reached 70 degrees. Sow 3-5 seeds per hill with 2 to 4 feet between hills and to 3 to 4 feet between rows. Under ideal conditions germination will occur in 5-8 days. Melons are ready to harvest once the melon "slips" from the vine when gently tugged. Don't leave them too long, however, as ripe melons have a sweet aroma that attracts insects.

In approximately 60-70 days from seed to harvest, each vine yields 6 to 9 melons. They can be planted just a few feet apart, seem to enjoy a trellis, and thrive in partial shade rather than full sun. After the first frost, any immature melons can be plucked and stored to ripen further. A capable goalie.

Kajari is a little heirloom melon native to India's Punjab area. The fruit is aromatic and weighs between 2 and 3 pounds. They have the flavor of ripe honeydew and the appearance of beach balls! At farmer's markets, it's a surefire hit.

GROWING INSTRUCTIONS:

Germination:

Thoroughly moisten your seed-starting mix, and then fill your pots/containers to within 1/2" of the top.

Fill each little container or seed beginning cell with two or three seeds. 1/4" of dirt should be used to cover the seed.

To achieve good seed-to-mix contact, water. You may either use a plant mister or simply trickle water over the top. It's not necessary to saturate the soil; simply damp the top layer.

(You don't want to overwater the seeds and "push" them down so far that they can't germinate.)

Keep the mixture moist but not soggy. Cover pots with plastic kitchen wrap and a rubber band to keep heat and moisture in.

Place the pots in a warm, sunny spot or on top of a heat mat. (Seeds won't germinate until the soil itself is 75-80 degrees.)

Check pots daily. As soon as you see sprouts, remove the covering and place the pots in a sunny window or under grow lights, keeping the lights just an inch or two above the tops of the plants.

Melons prefer slightly sandy, very rich, well-drained soil. Be careful not to over-water vines, especially as fruit is approaching maturity.
