How to Grow Organic Chives Culinary Herb from Seed Organic chives seeds are a cool-season crop that can be sown direct or started indoors in early spring or early fall. For early starts, begin 6-8 weeks prior to transplanting. Plant 2-3 seeds .25" deep per cell or 2-4" apart in garden in fertile, organic, and well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade. Chives seeds germinate in 7-21 days, thinning to 1 per pot or 4-6" apart in the garden as true leaves establish.
